According to history it was the Aristocrats of Europe that started this particular trend. A cube of sugar was placed in a pretty little box at each setting and these were called ‘bonboniere’. Sugar was a symbol of wealth and even royalty.

In the U.K. it was traditional to place 5 sugared almonds in the box or pouch and these were said to represent health, happiness, well-being, long life and fertility (of the bride).wedding favors
